I am so excited about this new resource! Okay...new to me anyway. I can't wait to explore all it has to offer! Where has this been all of my teaching career??? I am talking about OpenEd.com!

I am going to be honest and up front. I just found this website this week. Since I have newly discovered this amazing site, I am only going to cover the basic basics. As I learn, I will try to post more.

A brief summary of the website OpenEd.com from the Tech Crazy Teacher

What is it?

OpenEd.com boasts having the largest K-12 educational resource library. It houses links to videos, games, lesson plans, assessments, and homework assignments. Each resource item is aligned with standards such as Common Core or Next Generation Science standards and sorted by grade level and subject. Video and game resources are also sorted by effectiveness- i.e. did they actually help students learn the standard? I love this feature!

OpenEd.com doesn't just gather resources for teachers; it gives teachers the ability to assign resources to students or the class. OpenEd then grades the assignments and tracks students' progress. AND it goes 1 step further! OpenEd evaluates the questions missed by the student. It gives teachers the ability to assign remedial work based on the students' answers and needs! Nice!

OpenEd.com also has an app for students. It is called Common Core Quest. Students can take quizzes to demonstrate their mastery of math and language art skills.

How much does it cost?

Most of the site is free. It does have a Premium membership for $9.95 a month with a 1 month trial. The upgraded membership allows you to have access to assessments from certain publishers such as Pearson and Harcourt. You can search for just free items if you wish to. I didn't see any need to have the premium membership.

How to search?

You can search for items to supplement your lessons through grade level, resource type, standard, subject, and even publisher. For example, I can do a search for 3rd grade Common Core math free videos from Learnzillion.

How am I going to start using OpenEd.com?

I am going to start with the basics. Instead of searching as I watch TV for videos and games and lessons to help supplement my own lesson plans, I am going to let OpenEd.com do the scouring for me. This is something I can implement right away. Later, I will add my students and try the assignment aspect of the site.

  4. Too funny...I went to a workshop where they kept talking about LMS (not realizing it stood for Learning Management System). We use LMS to mean "Library Media Specialist." (LOL...Librarians Overdoing Lingo?)
