The Magic of Wordless Picture Books

The Magic of Wordless Picture Books from Tech Crazy Teacher

Wordless books are pure magic! They are great for igniting students' imaginations. Students can have loads of fun writing down the words that the illustrators have left silent.
I usually start my wordless book lessons with the book The Whisper by Pamela Zagarenski.

This is a beautiful book about a girl who gets a magic book from her teacher. Unfortunately, all the words slip out of the book and the girl has to make up her own stories to go with the illustrations. Many of the pictures give a story starter written by the little girl. Students can take the story starter and continue the story. I like to take one of the story starters and expand on it as a class. Then, I let my students' creativity flourish. This book is a great way to get started using wordless books in your class.

Here are some of my favorite wordless books. These are great for all ages. The stories that students can create for these can be simple or very complex. These books create the platform some students need to be creative in their writing.

Tuesday is illustrated by David Wiesner. The book won a Caldecott Medal for its pictures. Kiddos love to see what happens at night when the frogs take flight on their lily pads. David Wiener also has other wordless books such as Freefall, Sector 7, and Flotsam.

Unspoken: A Story from the Underground Railroad by Henry Cole is a little more involved. The pictures are beautiful pencil sketches. Will the young girl find the courage to help the slaves? Having your students answer that question leads to great writing!

Journey by Aaron Becker is so beautiful! A young girl has a red pen that she uses to draw parts of the illustrations. She first draws a magic door in her bedroom that opens to an enchanting world. Students can write about one page or the whole book. The companion books to this one are Quest, and Return (released soon).
