Tech Thursday: End of School Tech Checklist Freebie

The end of school is quickly approaching for most of us.  This gives us a great opportunity to do some house-cleaning on the technology side of things.  Take a few minutes each day and check off one of these end-of-the-year tech chores.  Then when it's time to return to school, you will be tech ready to go!  Go to my store to download the Tech Checklist Freebie!

Odd One Out- Math Strategy Game {With A Freebie}

Do your students like to play games? Do they like to play math games? Do they like strategy games? I am going to share a math strategy game with you. It is called Odd One Out. I learned about this game last year at a workshop. There wasn't a game board or a recording sheet, so of course I *had* to make one. We started playing it during the first few weeks of school this year and it is still one of the favorite games during math workshop. My students last year, figured out the strategy pretty quickly. My group this year... not so much. A few of them "think" they have a strategy figured out, so I challenge them to a game and prove their strategy wrong!

To play the game, students need 15 math chips. You could use just about any sort of counter or chip that you have in your classroom. Students are in groups of two to play the game. If you have an odd number, you can play too! Another option would be to put three students in a group and have them rotate each game (two students playing, one student recording). Students also need the Odd One Out Game Board and the Recording Sheet. I have uploaded these as a FREEBIE for you! Click here to download them.

The way the game works, students place all 15 chips onto the game board where the little snowballs are. They should have 3 in the top row, 5 in the middle row and 7 in the bottom row. Color doesn't matter. Then they take turns removing chips. They can remove any number from any one row. They cannot take chips from multiple rows. This means that they could remove all of the chips in one row in one turn or only take one chip. The choice is theirs.

When they have taken a chip or chips from a row, they need to record it on the sheet. My students got a system figured out... if you are taking the chips, the other player records for you. It works out really well. Let's look at this picture so that I can explain what I mean by record their move.
This student is going to remove two chips from the top row. They would record under player one, 2 T. You can totally have your students write the full word (top, middle, bottom), but for me a T, M or B does the trick.

Then it is the next players turn to take chips. This continues until one of the players clears the last chip(s). Let me tell you, the first few moves are fast... then all of the sudden playing comes to a near standstill while a player is trying to figure out their move. Talk about deep thinking!!! They have to plan ahead and try to guess what the other player might do. Here are some pictures of my students mid-action.
You can see little plastic cups in the pictures? These are portion containers that you can find at most grocery stores in the plastic cups/paper plate aisle. These little containers have lids. I use them to keep my math chips in specific amounts for certain games. I have a few different sets of these containers labeled with a game title on the lid. This one is for a game called Bump which requires each player to have 8 chips (2 different colors). I put 16 chips in each cup and labeled the cup Bump. With the game, Odd One Out, the color of the chips doesn't matter and they only need 15 chips... so my kiddos know to just grab a bump chip container and they are good to go. So slick!

My favorite part about this game is seeing the strategies that my students come up with. They are all very interesting and most of the time the strategy is one I would have never come up with. Students can show me their strategies on Fridays during math workshop. This is their chance to "challenge the teacher-master". Basically... that means they get to explain their strategy to the class and then face off against me under the document camera. Only once has a student figured out the strategy (and that was last year). I let my class keep trying over and over again. A few of my students said that they have played the game at home with random things like legos as the chips. *insert thrilled teacher here*

I hope that this is a game that you can use with your students. It is definitely a game that is fast and you could use it in between instruction times if you have a few extra minutes. I know with testing looming over all of us, there is always a few minutes here or there. Make sure you grab the freebie to use with your class. The recording sheet is totally optional. I like to see the steps my students take, but it could easily be skipped. Hope you love it!

Freebie Friday!

This week has been SO busy for me (as it probably has been for you). I attended an AMAZING math workshop conference with 5 of my colleagues and I learned a ton. It was one of those seminars that you leave asking yourself, "Why haven't I been doing this all along?". Have you ever attended a conference like that?

I have plans to share tons of ideas with you as I implement math workshop in a whole NEW way in my classroom. It will be something that I will have to work at changing over the next few weeks. Hopefully over our holiday break, I can tell you all about it. My students love doing Daily 5 (as do I) and we also do a partial math workshop. Daily 5 is a smashing success in our room. Math workshop.... um... not so much. This conference has changed my entire way of thinking about math and I am so excited!! Anyways...

Today we are linking up with the Teaching Blog Addict for their Freebie Friday. Below you can find three of our favorite freebies from our stores! Go check them out and then stop over at the Teaching Blog Addict to see what other freebies teachers have linked up with!

I hope that you had a blessed Thanksgiving and enjoyed spending some time with all of your families. For those of you that will be Black Friday shopping today.... good luck! My husband and I were able to go last night and get the few things we wanted!

Friday Freebie: Spelling Chain

What could be better than a FREEBIE on FRIDAY?  Today we are linking up with Teaching Blog Addict for their fabulous Freebie Fridays!

Spelling is sometimes horribly monotonous.  We tend to do the same activities each week.  On Monday, we take a pretest.  On Tuesday, we write the words in a sentence.  On Wednesday, we.....gee, just typing this stuff is making me yawn.

The FREEBIE that I am sharing today is a little bit different.  Students still practice their spelling words.  They even can write the words 3 times each.  Sound familiar?  Here's the twist...students write the words on bands of paper.  They then decorate the paper with patterns and colors.  Some of my students love this part of the spelling project.  After their paper bands are decorated, students cut the bands out and then glue them together to make a spelling chain.

My students love making the chain.  I have done this with first graders and third graders alike. I usually find the chains hanging in our student lockers for decoration.  The kiddos think it looks marvelous and eventually want to connect different week's words together!  Get rid of that old tired spelling routine and add in some spice....download this cool freebie!  It has spelling chain sheets for 10, 12, 15, and 20 words.

Enjoy your FREEBIE and your Friday!

Free Font Friday!

Hi everyone! I am so excited about all the good stuff going on in Vegas this week! Most of my fun will happen today, so I'm sure there will be a post about it one day next week, but in the meantime, I'm linking up for Free Font Friday!

Free Font Friday has been so much fun this summer! I really hate that this is the last week, and hope someone picks it up year-round! Everyone loves a free font, amiright?! I asked on Facebook and Instagram and this was overwhelmingly the favorite choice from my TPT store for this week's free font! Grab it this weekend, because it goes back to paid on Monday night (a little extra time for all my Vegas friends to get home!)

Five For Friday! Plus a Free Font!

Today we are linking up with Doodlebugs Teaching for the 5 for Friday Linky!  One of our favorites!  We are also linking up with The Teaching Tribune for Free Font Friday!

My lovely daughter and I had a movie day.  We went and saw X-men Days of Future Past.  I love that my kiddos are now old enough to go rock out with the action movies with me.  Believe me when I say that I "have done my time"  with the cartoons and now really, REALLY, enjoy sitting next to my children in movies I love too.  And, yes, I, am the kind of gal that loves her sci-fi action. If you liked the other X-men movies, there is no reason why you won't like this one.  Oh, and by the way, Hugh Jackman, wow...I am just sayin....worth the price of the ticket....

When you sign your son up for soccer at 4 years of age and he plays soccer, well, forever, you BECOME a soccer mom.  You embrace a sport you may have never known.  You may not know anything about soccer when you start, and I do mean anything, but over the years, you learn.  You learn positions such as midfield and striker, what yellow and red cards are, what off-sides and set plays are, and what an own goal is.  Terms such as dribbling, hat tricks, juggling, crosses, and penalties take on new meanings for soccer moms.  You learn cheers such as, "Great Header!" "Attack!" "Defend!" "Pressure!" "Offsides!".  Most importantly you learn about the World Cup and how to watch  enjoy watching the matches with your son.  For 1 month every 4 years ESPN becomes your best friend.  Okay, we lost, but we fought valiantly AND escaped the claws of the the group of death.

Going to Missouri to visit my mom, dad, and sister!  I grew up in Southeast Missouri in the small town of Jackson.  Can't wait!

My favorite place to eat is a super small and is unique to the town.  It's a barbecue place called Wib's.  It started as a Jackson tradition way back in the 1940's.  My kids and I go there sometimes before we even go to my mom's.  Shhh. Don't tell.

This is the view from the front porch of my mom and dad's house.  Perfect peace for me every time.  And perfect weather: Sunny and 75!

The 4th of July!

July 4th means so much to the Teaching Trio!  Each of our children have a father who has served in the Army, who has laid his life on the line for our country, and who has left their families behind for multiple deployments to ensure that our independence and freedoms continue.  We are also 3 teachers who teach on a military installation to military dependents.  Our students deal with deployments, PTSD, moving, separations from family, and so much more.  We are 3 women who do not take our independence in our great nation for granted.  We know what is given daily to protect what we have in the United States of America!

Happy Independence Day!

We're also linking up with The Teaching Tribune for another Free Font Friday!

Kristen has been making fonts all week, and wants to share this one with you as a flash freebie! This one is not normally free, so grab it over the weekend...it's back to being a paid font on Monday morning!

Thank you Kristen for the free font!  Have a great holiday weekend!

March Currently

I can't believe it's already March! This is our short month - three weeks of school, and then Spring Break! I'm linking up for one of my favorite linkys, Farley's Currently!

Listening... My little man surprised his daddy and I today by singing his ABC's! He's still missing a lot of letters, but he's doing pretty well considering we hardly ever sing it to him. I'm a proud mama for sure!

Loving...that I figured out how to put fan freebies on my Facebook page, AND that I had extra time to work on it tonight.

Thinking...no explanation needed here, I'm sure. Testing so early is stressful, but once it's over, I'm so happy!

Wanting...I am SO over this cold weather. Tonight, we are down to the low teens with freezing rain/ice until 3am, then snow on top of it. UGH! I am ready for spring!

Needing...Just one more day of the weekend. Our students are off tomorrow due to the weather, but teachers still have to report on a two-hour delay. Fingers are crossed for work time in our rooms! I totally need it!

?????...Brookies. You have to guess the question. Leave your guesses in the comments, and there just might be a reward for you if you're right!

When you're finished guessing and downloading your freebie, head over to Farley's blog to see what everyone else is up to in March!

Freebie Friday! Stoplight Check

I created this Stoplight Assessment tool to use for formative assessment. I used it primarily in math last year.

At the end of the lesson, students wrote a quick note to me on a sticky note about how they were doing with the concept and put it on the correct spot on the stoplight. It makes a really quick and easy way to get a snapshot of how the class is feeling before you decide to move on to something new.

To make your own, just cut out red, yellow, and green circles (I used scrapbook paper) and arrange them like a stoplight. Then grab the freebie labels from my TPT store, print, cut, and attach!
